During my mental health placement, I had the opportunity to spend some time with the CAMHS (Child & Adolescent Mental Health Service) psychiatry team. It was distressing to witness patients repeated admissions, usually with paracetamol and alcohol overdose. A 16-year-old adolescent girl with a history of depression and opioid dependence, presented to the ED via emergency medical services after her father found her lying on the couch unwell. At admission, she was complaining of abdominal pain and nausea. During the physical examination, her general condition was well and vital signs were stable. I felt that that the consultant and the rest of the team tried their best to get the patient involved in her care plans as well as patients' views being taken into consideration in decision-making processes. GMC guidelines state “ You must work in partnership with patients, sharing with them the information they will need to make decisions about their care,21 including their condition, its likely progression and the options for treatment, including associated risks and uncertainties”. However, she refused to admit into the mental health ward.

I learned that the interview process needed to be conducted sensitively especially with adolescent groups as they may be more concerned with disapproval towards their behaviors or rationales.The importance of active listening skills, expressing concerns through tone of voice and deliberate attempt to demonstrate empathy are all encourage patient to have a sense of safety and gain cooperation.
