As a teacher there are many ways to promote equality and diversity but it is important to know the difference between the two. Equality is providing each individual with the same rights to fair access to attend and participate within the subject that they have chosen to learn. They should be treated the same regardless of their age, sex, race etc and also regardless of their circumstances and abilities. Diversity is recognising and valuing the differences between students regardless of their circumstances, abilities and any other characteristics they may have and been able to meet any needs in order for them to be included within the class.
Firstly during the class I need to make sure that I am not judgmental towards my students I should take a zero tolerance attitude to any negative behaviour or discrimination etc and to encourage respect and inclusion amongst the learners. It is important that I don’t give more attention to some pupils than others. I must respect that my own beliefs may differ to the students beliefs and to respect that and not to impose these upon them. One of the ways I could make the student aware of different faiths and religions is by hand outs for the students to read first then discuss as a group afterwards. By doing this it encourages the learners to interact with each other and will help one feel at ease within the group’s presence, therefore feeling safe and providing a better learning environment and also it will help them value and respect each others
