Lane County was established in 1851 and is the 4th largest county in Oregon by population (Oregon Historical County Records Guide, n.d.). The largest cities within Lane County are Eugene, Springfield and Cottage Grove. Historically, Lane county economy had been based on timber and agriculture. Lane County sits on the edge of Oregon’s largest timber stands. The moderate climate of the Willamette Valley promoted very fertile soil and productive farming. At this time, timber harvesting has been significantly reduced through Federal regulations and increased population has decreased the agricultural market.
