To begin with, Odysseus was selfless. When traveling upon the island of the lotus eaters he found out that anyone who was to consume the lotus became in a way, attached to the island and never wanted to return. During the trojan war the Greeks, for ten years could not get through to the interior of troy walls. Then came the creative idea of Odysseus. “He ordered his men to build a giant wooden horse outside the city gates… they soon discovered, too late, that the horse was filled with Greek soldiers and that their city was doomed.” (The Trojan War, page 368) Odysseus used his cleverness to come up with a plan leading his people to success. In another instance proving Odysseus’ intelligence is when he took the lambs of the cyclops and,” Tied them slightly together…then slung a man under each middle one to ride there safely.”(page 381, lines 337-340)
Lastly, Odysseus is courageous. Although he had was a little bit on the egoistical side an wasn’t always 100% honest, everything he did was for his team. When encountering the Scylla, he did not tell his men for he knew they could do nothing. Instead Odysseus,” Tie on my cuirass and took up two heavy spears, then mad my way along to the foredeck-thinking to see her first from there.” (page 396 Lines 163-168) Odysseus kept this information from his men to insure their safety, that they’d be better off without now the dangers because they would only make the men more
