It is the basis to patient care in nursing. Infection control is the primary intervention for patient care. Handwashing is imperative and the number one infection prevention precautions. Each person’s germs are uniquely theirs. Where one germ may never make its host sick it may kill another person who is introduced to it. Washing hands in between patients and wearing gloves for all procedures where body fluids may be involved cuts down infection by over 50% (Savitz, Jones, & Bernard, 2014). Included in this standard is also cleaning wounds and dressing them appropriately to limit infection and reinfection.
The second criteria are not completing care or leaving a task unfinished. When administering drugs or providing patient care procedures, nurses need to be sure to complete the task. All medications should be administered in its entirety and procedures completed before leaving the patient. Relying on someone else to complete a task or leaving it completely unfinished leaves room for error. No matter how small an error is it can lead to permanent or lethal damage in humans. These are secondary areas of infection. These devices are not a regular part of a human. It introduces a new entry area for bacteria. These devices need to be inserted using sterile techniques. Skin needs to be cleaned thoroughly. Nurses need to wash hands and glove. The devices also need to be inspected regularly for functionality. Infiltration can cause a patient excruciating pain and tissue necrosis (Savitz, Jones, & Bernard, 2014). A clogged catheter can cause a buildup bacterium in the bladder causing a severe infection.
The fourth criterion is mobility of patients. Immobile patients need to be turned every two hours. Skin breakdown is a major cause of skin infections. These kinds of infections can be avoided by making sure the patient is always clean and dry and positioned. Frequently checking incontinent patients is also very important. The help of a nurse aide may be used for this criterion. Keeping moisture off of skin helps maintain skin integrity. Skin tears, lacerations and open wounds harbor
