Quito, founded in 1534 over the ruins of northern Inca capital, holds the largest and greatest preserved colonial areas in Latin America. It offers a superior collection of baroque art in its colonial architecture, paintings and sculpture.

Today, close to 2 million people are living in Quito. It was the first city to get named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978.
