The race riots were a violent time in East St Louis white workers kept African Americans from having membership in their unions. The African Americans worked for lower wages then the white workers did and also agreed to be strikebreakers. Riots broke out over the thought of black men and white women associating together during labor meetings.

After Warren G. Harding was elected president of the United States in 1920 he announced his intension of abandoning President Wilson’s Progressive ideals. Harding ended the National War Labor Board and other agencies which regulated private industry. He wanted the corporations to have their own independent control and no longer be regulated.
