The fifth chapter discusses the different situations adults face with racial identity. This chapter talks about the different experiences a black adult might face when they attend college. These experiences could either be when attending a predominantly black school or a predominantly white school. Beverly Tatum explains that when she went to college there were mostly black people that attended. She even says that in high school there weren't enough black people to sit with in the cafeteria. That however changed when she went to Wesleyan. She made several friends but seemed to forget the names of the white people that attended the school with her. It is explained that she wanted to surround herself with those that shared the same racial background.
