1930’s Alabama was a dangerous place for black men and women alike. It was even more dangerous for black men convicted of rape. That’s what happened to the Scottsboro boys. They were accused by 2 white girls of rape. They were convicted by a biased and unfair judge. They were thrown in prison. All of this happened because of the level of racial bias that existed then. It was indeed one of the largest prevailing beliefs that blacks were more violent, and less trustworthy than whites. That they were semi-barbaric. One place we can see this is when Patterson, one of the boys in prison, talks about the prison officials and guards beating them. "The cell door banged open. They beat on us with their fists, they kicked and tramped our legs.", he said.
