The majority of people thought he was guilty, but luckily Atticus was guarding the jail cell. Atticus showed courage in standing his guard and not letting the mob intimidate him. Harper Lee writes,“You can turn around and go home again, Walter.” (172). Atticus said this after one of the men told him, “You know what we want, Get out of the door” (172). Atticus shows fortitude and strength by persevering and not wavering at the mob. Atticus just calmly asked Mr. Cunningham and the rest of his men to leave without raising his voice or acting scared, and eventually it worked and Atticus had successfully protected Tom Robinson and the jail cell. Another example of Atticus showing courage in adversity is when Scout is at school and gets made fun of because kids say that Atticus defends n******. “In a flash Atticus was up and standing over him”(128).
