First we are putting aside our everyday mode of chat and entering the wondrous world. Generally, I like reviewing fiction; short stories and novels, with a predilection for anything Australian. So it is an extreme departure and new experience you can say for me to feel impelled to review Raising my Voice by Malalai Joya. To continue this week’s discussion, this novel is arranged to represent a particular issue such as oppression and integrity, therefore today we will look at “Raising my voice” by Malalai Joya. Raising my voice was originally published in 2009 and was released in the US and Canada as “A Woman among Warlords”. The moment Joya made the decision despite the fact that she knew how all women are treated in her country. In her country, most women are still caged and still haven’t claimed their independence. They don’t have equal rights as men. Women are banned from appearing in public without hijab and needs a male relative to be accompanied. Most of Afghan women wears burqa which itself is a symbol of oppression. Rape goes unpunished. Reading from the book; Joya says that, “in Afghanistan, killing a woman is like killing a bird” (3), in my opinion it can mean that killing women are not a big deal and women are worth as much as a bird, where everyone’s life is precious. Malalai used the term “shocked and appalled” when she saw such warlords and other war villains were presented at the official traditional gathering in Kabul, it’s also called “Loya Jirga”. Fascists, fundamentalists with bloody pasts; a sponsor of Osama bin Laden and trainer and mentor of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (the alleged mastermind of the World Trade Centre attacks); Jamiat-e-Islami fundamentalists who had issued rules for women that were as bad as the Taliban’s; men known for their ruthlessness; former Soviet puppets and civil war criminals.
