Have you ever felt like an onion? Like when you have as many emotions an onion has layers? If so, you can definitely relate to any girl who is sour on the outside and sweet on the inside. The author, Toni Cade Bambara boldly wrote about a story, “Raymond’s Run”. She has captured many sides and emotions of the main character, Hazel Elizabeth Deborah Parker, or Squeaky for short. Squeaky has many emotions and challenges that she must overcome. Squeaky can be sassy, but can also be caring and confident when it comes down to protecting her brother, Raymond from bullies. The author describes Squeaky charging through life in full in sassy sister mode, protecting her disabled brother, Raymond, from being bullied. She fearlessly stands up to the antagonist Gretchen, and strides through life with Raymond alongside her. She looks tough, but really, she is just caring. Just don't get on her bad side! Squeaky’s main challenges are, to protect Raymond and to try to live up to her mom’s expectations. Squeaky stands up for herself and is not afraid of her antagonist Gretchen, even if she does tease her. She puts on her sassy face and bosses them away from her. Squeaky has multiple layers of emotions throughout the story that most people might not be able to see right away.
