Over the past week, I have been teaching Ethan how to drive a manual transmission car. I admit, at first I was nervous about letting Ethan drive my 2000 Audi A4 but after Ethan and I discussed how to properly drive a stick shift I felt more comfortable. The main reason I wanted to teach Ethan how to drive stick shift was because I have explained how to drive manual to people but never actually taught anyone hands on. I looked at this as an opportunity to test my knowledge and teaching skills. I also liked the aspect of re-learning how to drive stick shift because I knew it would benefit me as a driver and as an instructor. Even before Ethan started driving my car I noticed some differences in our terminology. This immediately made me realize that I need to look at this from his perspective while providing Ethan with the best possible instruction. Re-watching the instructional Youtube videos helped me a lot because I relearned the basics and was able to simplify the pre-driving learning process. As the week progressed I noticed a direct relationship between Ethan’s driving performance and my enthusiasm. The first two days Ethan started driving I was slightly nervous but also sick with a cold so I had a lack of enthusiasm and excitement. I could tell the way I felt did not make Ethan completely comfortable and it showed in his driving. Thankfully, I was able to notice this early in the week and made it a priority to change my mood. I learned that an instructor’s confidence, patience, and enthusiasm directly impacts whether the student or students will effectively learn. Another thing I learned is that in any relationship but especially between a teacher and a student, communication is absolutely vital. There were a couple times when Ethan was driving and didn’t understand my instructions and that made it very difficult for me but also made me realize that everyone comprehends things
