For my read-aloud assignment, I read to my friend’s little brother, Landon, who is 9 years old (8 at the time I read to him). The book I chose was The Magic Tree House: Dinosaurs Before Dark by Mary Pope Osborne. I chose the book by going online and looking up “good fourth-grade books” and going on the Scholastic website. When I saw the Magic Tree House series I recognized it because both of my siblings and I read the series when we were little. The series is also on the list of “Outstanding Series Books” in my Survey of Literature for Children course which gave me reassurance that the book would be developmentally appropriate and a good book to share with a child of his age. During the time leading up to the read-aloud, I was actually really nervous, unlike during my observation hours. Even though I had known Landon since he was born I had never really interacted directly with him. I had also only been to the house a few times and this is where I chose to film the assignment. I did this so that he would feel comfortable but did not consider how I would feel. From the beginning, I felt awkward in the environment and did not know where to sit or when to start filming. A large part of why I was nervous to read to him was that he is a boy. I felt that due to my personality and experiences I was not ready to adequately connect with a boy as much as I would with a girl I now recognize that this was stereotyping him based on my own schema of what boys are like. However, at the time I was worried that he would be rowdy or overly energetic and not want to stay still and listen to me read the entire first chapter of the book.
