When I am asked “Why do you want to be a reconstructive plastic surgeon?” my words generally fail me. There wasn’t an unexpected event or situation that changed my life, nor was it suggested to me by my mentors. I just happened upon the idea one day in my freshman Careers class. Once the notion was in my head, I could see how it was the right fit for me. Ever since I was a little kid, I have always had a fascination with anatomy and the miraculous abilities of the body. Yes, I was the child that would always squat over a dead animal and poke around the innards seeing how they were all connected, but I was genuinely interested in it. I think that my mom and dad also had an impact on my career choice.
Both of my parents are physical therapists who have started their own practice and become very successful people. Growing up, I would come to work with them, then in high school, during the summers, I would work for them. These opportunities helped educate me on how important the healthcare field is. It’s what they do every single day whether they are in the office consulting or in the operating room saving a life. I personally have been on the operating table and the results of my surgery aloud me to continue playing sports which is a pinnacle of my life. As a reconstructive surgeon, I could pass on the joy and the restoration of function that I experienced. Growing up in a farming community, I have seen the need for hand reconstructive surgery. Farming accidents happen all the time, a finger cut off, a hand split in two, both of these injuries can be corrected by a reconstructive plastic surgeon. For me, there is no greater satisfaction in life than knowing that I made a positive difference in someone’s life; that I was able to reach out my hand to someone in need and give them a better quality of
