Wilson Rawls wrote the first version of Where the Red Fern Grows. Later, his wife convinced him to return to writing. She helped him by editing the manuscript. In 1961 the book was published in hardcover as Where the Red Fern Grows. After that, in 1974 Where the Red Fern Grows was made into a movie, which was narrated by Wilson Rawls himself. Journals and movies have similarities and differences as a kind of entertainment. I believe they can best be compared and contrasted in three ways. We can discuss their plot, character, and resolution. First of all, the plot of this story in both the journal and the movie was similar. I saw the movie, when the mountain lion was trying to attack Billy and his dogs, there were surprising loud sounds and I was surprised, so I thought the sounds were important. And when I read the journal, I wasn’t surprised by the mountain lion like in the movie. Also when Billy and the others were hunting and Billy's grandfather was lost, it was stormy. So the intense situation was transmitted. Second, the character of this story in both the journal and movie was similar. But, in the journal I can’t see what the character looks like compared to the movie, I can see what the character looks like. So, when I read the journal, I imagine Billy as an old boy, and his sister as an older girl. Also, I didn’t know what the “Red Fern” looked like. And I think what Red Fern looks like is so important, because Red Fern is the title of the journal and movie. And in the movie, the dogs looked more active than in the book. Although, in the journal, even when the dogs were barking and chasing the raccoon, I didn’t imagine that the dogs were active. In the movie, when the dogs were hunting, etc. And in the journal, Billy has an older sister and two younger sisters. But in the movie, Billy has just two younger
