This essay is about how the book is more detailed and entertaining than the movie and also a comparison. In 1961 the book Where The Red Fern Grows was published by Wilson Rawls and shortly after in 1974 the movie was released.
This is a short summary of the book. It is about a boy named Billy Colman who lives in the Ozark Mountains. Billy has always wanted two coon hounds, but his family was not the richest, so he decided to work for the hounds. One day he see’s his grandpa and he shows Billy a flier for a coon hunting contest. Let's talk about the book! The characters in the book have exquisite detail in explaining their personalities, feelings, and more. The biggest thing about the characters in the book is their feelings. there's a quote in the book that goes “I laid her head in my lap and with tear-filled eyes gazed up into the heavens’’(Rawls, pg 123). In my opinion that showed so many feelings in the character. Here’s another one, “I wanted so much to step over and pick them up several times I tried to move my feet but they seemed to be nailed to the floor” (Rawls, Pg 20). Here’s one last one “Rainie was paralyzed with fright. His mouth and eyes were wide open and his face white as chalk” (Rawls, Pg 76) These quotes in the book show how much detail they put into the characters' feelings, and stuff like that in the book makes me able to visualize the characters' looks and feelings. The character's looks that were explained made me able to visualize the characteristics and when I saw the movie it was very accurate. But one thing the movie has the benefit of is that there are visuals and you can see the emotions. But the emotions are much less shown and explained than in the
