Abstract Here I discuss my own personal learning styles, strengthens, and weakness. I took a self-assessment and learned I am an auditory learn. Came up with a strategy to help me manage my time, reduces stress, and retain new information.
Self Assessment/ Reflection
A self-assessment is having the ability to recognize one’s own strengths and weaknesses. It seems that my strengths and weaknesses are one and the same, the same issue that make me strong also is the one I need the most work on. Time management, stress, and my individual learning style are issues that I personally need to strengthen. While they have gotten me thus far, there is always room for self-improvement.
Time management is very important for many people, but even more important for people who have busy schedules or more than one occupation. I personally take on many responsibilities and so time management is essential. I am a wife, mother, student, and an active member in the church. I sometimes wait until the last possible minute to complete a task, but for mostly I get them complete on time. Each day I must deal with different tasks. However, I have not set down to figure out how I best manage my time, I seem to work better this way. It is not until the afternoons that any structure enters my day. Weekends are the worse because my entire family is home, and I can never get any time alone. At this point it may not seem like I am not managing my time well but what I am doing is working right now. There are many things I could do to enhance my time management’s skills. To include buying a new calendar and placing important dates, and actives on the calendar with its time. Assigning certain days of the week for church related actives, completing all my class work during the week, so my family would have the weekends with me. Stop procrastinating although active procrastinators prefer to work under pressure and make deliberate decisions to procrastinate tasks, nevertheless, they usually complete their tasks on time (Gafni, 2010, p. 116). Doing these things will give me some type of schedule to go by, and strengthening my time management skills. (Ritchlin (2002) states, perhaps stress is related to our perceived lack of control and direction in our own lives (p. 1). With my inability to manage time, sometimes I feel as if I am not in control, and it leaves me feeling stressed. Other times I do not have the time to even feel stressed, it seem as if I live my life on fast forward, and I am constantly moving. Still there are times I think if one more situation occurs I will explode. I am not managing my stress at all, and exploding is not good for anyone. There are many things I could do to help relieve my stress. Relaxation is a pleasant way for anyone to reduce stress, this could include going for a long walk, reading a book, listening to music, and meditation are all great ways to reduce stress. I personally like going to church on Sunday it relaxes me. At church it seems as if I, get to release the stress and pressure from the week. In addition I could take time and go to the gym, I use to exercise before I had my twins and that always relaxed me. Also short naps are a great way for me to clear my mind and forget about the stress of the day, and when I awake I feel refreshed and ready to face the world. In addition, I think that by managing my time better, and it could help to reduce my stress level.
Like many people I never even consider what my exact learning style is. I had no idea that there is one best way for me to learn. After viewing the four major learning styles I thought I was a visual learner. However, after completing a learning style assessment I discovered that I am an auditory learner. I
