Refugees in the United States of America
A refugee is a person who seeks refuge in another country as they believe that they face persecution in their home countries. The United States of America is a hospitable state going by the record of the many asylum seekers and refugees who have sought hostage here. It is important to note that the United States is the leading country in the world to offer asylum to refugees. The Displaced Persons act of 1948 was the first Act to deal with this issue of offering asylum to refugees. This came after the displacements that happened after the Second World War. According to reports by the UNHCR, the highest number comes from Syria and continues to rise by the day.
The refugees from Haiti are mainly running away from natural catastrophes like the constant earthquakes in the state. Those from Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia, Sudan and Iraq flee from the political violence in their home countries. The United States is seen as a haven for these immigrants and is seen as a land full opportunities for them.
According to the 1951 Refugee Convention, any country that assents to it should provide protection and asylum to the refugees in their countries. They should not turn the refugee away on their borders. The United States having ratified this Convention continues to provide protection to the refugees. Through the Oversees Processing Entity, the refugee whose case has been forwarded for resettlement gets the necessary documents to facilitate the travel. The person then goes through an interview with an officer from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service. The office then decides the case for the applicant and if successful they then undergo the necessary medical checks. After an NGO from the U.S agrees to sponsor the travel, they are then taken through a cultural orientation program and then booked on a flight to the United States.
Not all countries have refugee resettlement programs, and thereby the UNHCR urges more countries to take up the initiative. Other countries that have this program include Denmark, France, Finland, the Netherlands, Ireland, the UK, Sweden, Spain, Romania, Czech Republic, Portugal, and Norway.
