During my clinical shift, I had the opportunity to observe the role of a Registered Nurse at a skilled nursing facility. The skilled nursing facility I went to mainly cares for elderly adults who require a wide variety of medical care. The facility offers its residents multiple different living options including independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, memory care, rehabilitation, and respite care. During my observation, the Registered Nurse had to work on both the skilled nursing unit and the rehabilitation unit. The skilled nursing care section of the facility is for elderly adults looking for a place to stay long-term while also receiving professional nursing care. Since she was the charge nurse for the day, she guided her team throughout the day by providing her team with assistance throughout their busy day and coordinating their assignments. Throughout the clinical day, I have seen the Registered Nurse utilize many time management skills to keep up throughout the busy day. One way I noticed her do this was by completing multiple cares each time she went into different rooms. She would do this by completing things like medication administration, wound care, putting on compression wraps, getting the patient up for the day, and getting their breakfast set up before moving on to another patient. This allowed her to avoid going back and forth between residents. I find this technique to be very useful and I feel that it is something that I want to use throughout my nursing career. Another time management technique I noticed the Registered Nurse use was delegation. She did this by asking the CNAs, medication technicians, therapists, dietary aids, and other staff at the facility to help out with different cares to make the day go smoothly.
