In all eras, including today, Jews are attacked, yet the justification used for their destruction has shifted over time. Muslim prejudice against Jews began as a form of segregation within Mecca and Medina. The Quran detailed that no other religions, specifically Jews, were valid. Christian discrimination against the Jews was also prominent during the time of the Crusades. Jewish people were assigned the title of “Sinners” for their supposed role in the killing of Christ and killed to further Catholicism within the region. Historians have compiled a list of over 250 Islamic acts of death upon the Jews in the last 1300 years. Historically, Jews have not had the means to fight back, specifically in heavily populated Muslim regions such as the Middle East and Northern Africa. This led to the bombardment they have faced throughout history. However, it has not only been Muslim persecution that has plagued the Jewish people. The Crusades were an extremely tense time throughout the Middle East and Europe. Religious battles were waged throughout the region, pinpointing the conquering of Jews as another stepping stone toward victory. Many areas in Europe were home to numerous Jews. Ridding areas of Jews was an act the Christians felt they were justified to partake in. One instance of Judaic persecution during the Crusades is known as the “Massacre at Mainz.” Mainz, a city in modern-day Germany, was home to thousands of Jews. One of the fundamental themes behind all antisemitism, particularly that which occurred in medieval times, is a lack of acceptance and understanding of others. Both Islamic and medieval Christians had little desire to engage in discourse with the Jewish people. Although there were some outlying cases, seeking to understand those who were different was not something that often occurred. Today it is understood that discourse with those who are unlike oneself is not only important, but necessary. Peaceful dialogue has been proven to be an incredibly powerful tool for positive change. When tackling antisemitism today, it is important to recognize the lack of conversation that occurred in the past.
