“Remember why you started,” is a simple statement to never lose sight of your goals. But when hurdles arise it can be the hardest statement to follow. My decision to become a physician was an effortless one at a young age. I did not think about the journey, I just imagined myself in a white coat as a modern day hero. Over the years, as my decision has been tested, I realized I need stronger reasons behind my goal to succeed. I found these reasons through my experiences during college.
I learned about the story of Ann Marie Morse and her daughter Michelle Morse during my sophomore year while working as a chair for Colleges Against Cancer. Michelle was diagnosed with colon cancer during her junior year of college. When her physicians urged her to take a leave of absence from school she was faced with losing her health insurance. She chose to continue her education while undergoing treatment in order to secure her insurance coverage. She graduated while taking on legislature with her mother to ensure no other student would

I knew that I wanted to be a part of the healthcare solution. This desire became stronger the summer after sophomore year when I went on a trip to Honduras through Global Medical Brigades. This was one of my first opportunities to work closely with clinicians while treating patients. I remember treating a seven year old for a cut on her foot because she did not have shoes. Even with the pain she ran around with the other children playing soccer with an empty water bottle. It was incredible seeing children who did not have basic necessities and yet had the biggest smiles on their faces. During our two weeks we saw a total of 866 general patients, 33 gynecology patients, and completed 129 dental extractions. Though it was only a small percentage of what is truly needed to aid the problem it was rewarding to feel we made a
