Raphael along with his assistants created Study for Christ’s Charge to Peter c.1515. Red Chalk and Cartoon for Tapestry Portraying Christ’s Charge’s 1515-1516. The cartoons were first drawn with charcoal on paper (160-170 separate sheets were glued together and then over painted with color. They were then sent to Brussels and woven into tapestries. Raphael also created cartoons for the fresco The School of Athens. This work is viewed as one of his most influential achievements in the papal rooms that reflect dynamic unity of poses and gestures that are characteristic of High Renaissance art.
During the High Renaissance period Venetians artists considered themselves superior to artist from Florence and Rome. Venetians loved color and artists were masterful in the arts of textiles, jewelry, gold, enamel, glass, and mosaics. They drew upon the Byzantine traditions and produced art of rich pattern surfaces and accentuated light and color. They covered both wood panels and canvas and large canvas painting instead of frescos. Two significant artists during this time were Giorgione and Titian.
