This revolution was caused by the main characters David and Jennifer trying to get back home and trying to find information on how to get out, which then carried over to the other citizens of Pleasantville questioning what is “outside” of Pleasantville and discovering new qualities about the world that they live in, which finally leads the citizens of Pleasantville to split into to two societies and challenge each other with the traditional versus the new found …show more content…
It caused the the citizens to look outside of themselves and realise who they are through the discovery of new emotions and concepts. An example of this was when Jennifer taught Betty what sex was and she became aware of her own womanhood, which involved her making her own choices and falling in love with Bill from the Soda Shop. This was nothing like she ever knew before, which was answering to and pretty much living for her husband. The negative side to her discovering herself was that she became afraid of what her husband would now think of her, not wanting her husband to try and change her, which causes her to begin covering up her color out in public and in front of her husband. She does this to conform to what was considered normal in the Pleasantville society, but after spending time with Bill she learns to embrace her color and realise that there is nothing wrong with her, but the people around her. This is representative of the beginning and middle stages of revolution when people realise that there needs to be a change in society to adjust to the changes that are happening to the people. On the conforming side the people are not used to change, and find nothing wrong with the way the society is at that point. An example of this is the Mayor, gathering the adult, male population to keep the Pleasantville society in order and preventing the colored citizens from changing the way the town usually operates. This was caused due to fear of change, which is a recurring problem in all societies. There are citizens that get so comfortable with how they’ve been living, that it creates panic when they have to even imagine what life is like without that way of
