The Roanoke Colony was the first English settlement on the new land known today as North America. On May 8, 1587, a group of 117 people left England and sailed across the Atlantic Ocean. Due to the hurricane season, the colonists had to settle unexpectedly on Roanoke Island, an Island off of present day North Carolina. The colonists were initially headed for Chesapeake Bay.
