They left on three ships to bring a report of the colony back to England and to also bring back more supplies. On August 27, 1587, they left to go back to England, never to see the colony alive ever again. The Queen of England had been in a war with the Spanish and once White and his fleet returned to England there was a ban on all naval ships from leaving port. If this ban had never happened, White and his fleet would have been able to return as planned in March 1588. Although there was a ban, the commander of this entire colony, Raleigh, managed to arrange a two-ship relief mission for the colony, reportedly from the article it was three months ahead of the Spanish Armada, but the ships were too weak to go against the Spanish and they had to later retreat to England. They would fail to send out more relief boats for the colony until March 1590 with four ships finally making it back to the Roanoke colony.
