There was a lot of discrimination back in 1931, so people had to be brave to try and make things right. In Mildred Taylor’s book Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, Stacey is the oldest Logan child . He show lots of courage a lot throughout the book. Stacey had to show courage when he tricked the bus, when he went to the Wallace store to fight T.J. and when he took T.J. home when he was badly hurt and R.W. and Melvin Simms were after him. Have you ever had to have courage to do something very risky? Stacey showed courage when he dug the hole in the road so the bus would fall in. The white kid’s bus would splash the Logan kids everyday on their way to school, so they wanted to get revenge. He knew if he got caught making the trap for the white kids bus he would get in big trouble. In chapter 3, the text says, “Stacey hated. ‘All right,’ he said, ‘start digging.’ Without another word, he put his bare foot upon the top edge of the shovel and sank it deep into the soft road.” This shows that Stacey would do something very risky just to stop the bus from splashing and mocking them. Stacey helped T.J. get home, even after everything T.J. had done. T.J. got Mama fired, framed Stacey for cheating, and betrayed the Logans, so Stacey wasn’t sure about helping him. T.J. went with R.W. and Melvin Simms to the mercantile to rob it and they accidentally killed Mr. Barnett. After, the Simms brothers escaped the Mercantile, they beat up T.J. and threw him in the back of the truck. T.J. escaped and went to Logan’s and asked Stacey to take him home. In chapter 12, T.J. says, “Stacey, anybody find out, you know what they’d do to me?’ He Stood up, his face grimacing with pain. ‘Stacey you have to help me got home.” This shows that T.J. needs his help and Stacey is willing to have courage and take him home.
