One of the things the ancient city Rome was known for was for their engineering knowledge that no one had ever thought of before. The Roman architecture was seen from the 1st century. All of this gorgeous work had to start somewhere. The Roman’s style of building was different from other styles, but the Greeks had something very similar. One of the many things the Romans built was roads (or viae). The roads were originally built to carry materials from one place to another. That may be the reason why the first road was built around 500 BC when Rome was being expanded. This helped carry materials for building purposes and trade. When crossed, most people would either walk or ride in a chariot. In the Twelve Tablets, there is a law stating that the roads have to be 8 feet wide where straight, and 16 feet when there is a curve. Normally the roads were straight to avoid constant repairs to them. Records say that one road was 1000 paces, so that represents about 1480 meters. This was by far the largest building Rome had created by this time period. The Colosseum was built for entertainment and featured shows such as mock battles and dramas. Another game it held was gladiator battles, these were the most known events and were fights between men or animals for around 50,000 people to sit and watch. This building was a present from Emperor Vespasian to his people. He started it in 73-75 AD but it wasn’t until 80 AD when his masterpiece was finished, this was not a long time at all considering it was 615 feet long and 510 feet wide. It was made from stone and concrete and was supported by about 80 pillars. There were also arches to give it strength. Due to natural disasters, the Colosseum fell apart piece by piece.
