I enjoyed the documentary that was viewed in class this past week. It was very interesting to learn about the crime that occurred many years ago in Rome. This documentary made me very grateful to be born during this era and to be very fortunate for the life that I live. Reasons to support this statement is that about 98% of the population was poor. The likelihood of myself becoming poor would be very high. Many of the Romans lived in what was called an “insulae.”
Insulae’s were apartment buildings that housed the urban citizens of Rome. About 40,000 people lived in these insulae’s and families would be cramped up living in one room with each other.
Food was also very hard to get a hold off, especially being poor and living in this age. This led to killings because people were so desperate to feed themselves and their families. This makes me so grateful in a sense that I can just open my fridge and the food is right there. The roman citizens were lucky if grain was passed around so that they will have food to feed their families. If I was a wealthy person living in Rome, I would still be afraid to live in times such as these were. This documentary gave me more insight on this and made me more grateful to be living in a time like this. If a wealthy Roman was out alone in the middle of the night, he or she might have been beaten or even worse, murdered because a poor person would steal everything that that person was carrying. These were desperate times and desperate measures were taken in order to survive. During this time, many of the wealthy were also poisoned by people who happened to be close to them. One of the good things about being wealthy is that you would have a proper trial. If you were a poor person or a slave one of your punishments would be that you would be thrown in a sack with
