Long Way Down “Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.” Coming of age is when a person experiences an event that makes them change by making them more mature. Loss and love have a major impact on coming-of-age components. Two examples of coming-of-age events are in the books Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds and Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. In the first book, it follows the main character who has just lost his brother in a shooting. The second book is about a love story between Romeo and Juliet, which leads to their death. Loss is when you lose someone close to you. In the book Long Way Down, Will loses his brother, Shawn. In the book, there are rules that the characters follow. On his way down the elevator, he is visited by ghosts from his past who all died in gun-related deaths. The ghosts tell him stories about their deaths and one of the stories involved his Pops. Pops tells the story of when he killed the person who murdered his brother, Uncle Mark. Pops then tells Will that he killed the wrong person and that the person he killed was just a young adult trying to prove himself. “I stood alone in the empty box, face tight from dried tears, jeans soggy, a loaded gun still tucked in my waistband.” This specific example where Will matures is when the elevator stops at the bottom floor and all of the ghosts get off. Will is left alone with new knowledge and wisdom that will hopefully guide him on the right path and not make mistakes like the ghosts did. Love is an intense, deep affection for another person. In the play Romeo and Juliet, their families hate each other. Romeo falls in love with Juliet after seeing her for the first time at the Capulet party.
