Romeo is a man who has a huge interest in women but seems very weak with love although is very strong in front of men. Romeo demonstrates these actions as Romeo says, “Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight, For I he’er saw true beauty till this night.”(Shakespeare 27). Romeo is stating that Juliet happens to be the most beautiful women ever seen. But before Romeo met Juliet, Romeo’s feeling for Rosaline was still distinct. The reason why Romeo, Mercutio, and Benvolio went to the Capulet’s party is to meet Rosaline. Romeo said earlier in the play that, “O, she is rich in beauty, only poor that, when she dies, with beauty dies her store.”(Shakespeare 11), meaning that Rosaline is beautiful. The words said by Romeo sounds very genuine at the time until Romeo reuses the similar statement to explain Juliet’s beauty. Throughout the play, Romeo’s mind is focus on love and having a relationship. But Romeo’s love seems to scatter and divide among different women, making Romeo very weak as Romeo cannot settle with one woman. Romeo demonstrates the rejection towards Rosaline when Romeo states, “Her I love how doth grace by grace and love for love allow. The other did not so.”(Shakespeare 44) Romeo is indicating Juliet is accepting to Romeo’s confession while Rosaline does not accept Romeo’s love. As Romeo suffers from Rosaline rejection, Romeo replaces Rosaline with Juliet to get away from the miseries of rejection. Romeo and Juliet wants to escape the past with this relationship, hence being the reason as to why Juliet accepts Romeo’s love. As Romeo suffers from depression, Romeo chooses to get away from Rosaline while Juliet chooses to get away from Paris, which makes Romeo and Juliet living in a similar situation, escaping realities but isolating each other with this relationship. Therefore, artificial love is shown through Romeo as Romeo alters Rosaline with Juliet.
This play did not reveal “genuine love” as many people thought it would. Romeo presents a lot lust and infatuation throughout the play which does not consider “true love”. In the play, Romeo and Juliet did not love each other although the play is based on true love.
