One of the central themes in the William Shakespeare play Romeo and Juliet is love. Specifically, the theme is that love is potent. It can even be more powerful than death itself. This is apparent in literature as well as the real world. Love makes people crazy in this way, and love is what bonds people together despite unlikely odds.
Love is the force which bonds my own family together. I love both my mother and my father dearly, and the fact that they have been divorced for several years does not change this fact. I also find it in my heart to love each one of my family members despite their inherent flaws. My sister has struggled with mental health issues, dropping out of high school, and addiction to certain drugs. Romeo and Juliet loved each other in spite of them being from opposing families. In Act 2, Scene 2, Line 34-36, Juliet learns that her new love is a Montague, but even though she has been taught from an early age not to, she still loves him. In Act 5, Scene 3, Line 120, likely the most recognised scenes, Romeo discovers that the love of his life had apparently departed. Rather than choosing to live on without her, he believes death is a better option and commits suicide. When Juliet awakens from her deep sleep, she discovers Romeo has died and makes the same decision as him in Act 5, Scene 3, Line 170. Love is so strong that even death cannot weaken it. Moreover, love and its power take numerous forms beyond romantic love in Romeo and Juliet. Romeo’s love for his friend Mercutio makes him forget sanity and kill Mercutio’s murderer Tybalt in Act 3, Scene 1, Line 122-126.
