Ronald Wilson Reagan is one of America’s most beloved presidents. He was born on February 6, 1911 in Illinois to Jack and Nellie Reagan. He was called “Dutch” because as a child Ronald looked like a little fat Dutchman. His father opened a shoe store. Reagan graduated from Dixon High School and then furthered his educated at Eureka College. Ronald attended Eureka College on an athletic scholarship. HE had majored in economics, played three sports, was student body president, acted in as many productions as possible, as was deeply involved his sociology class. He had found work after graduating in 1932 as a radio sports announcer in Iowa. Reagan signed a contract with Warner Bros in 1937. He had starred in over 50 films during his Hollywood career. Reagan always had the qualities of a leader. In 1947-1952 he was the president of the Screen Actors Guild. He met actress, Nancy Davis, who came to him for help after she was listed as a communist on the Hollywood blacklist. When Reagan met Nancy it was love at first sight. Reagan was afraid of remarrying because he just went through a painful divorce. Finally, in 1952 the pair wed and went on to have two children. His acting career was coming to an end but he managed to land the job as host on General Electric Theater in 1954. His job was to tour the United States as a relations representative. During this time, his life changed. He switched from liberal to conservative, became pro-business, and spoke out against government spending. Reagan had run for governor of California and won in 1964. He was re-elected for a second term in 1970. In 1968 and 1976, Ronald tried to run for president but had failed to win the nomination. Finally in 1980, Reagan had received the nomination from his party. He defeated Jimmy Carter by more than half of the popular vote.
