Right after being born he was nicknamed “Dutch” by his father for his resemblance to a “fat little dutchman”. Throughout his early childhood, he and his family moved from town to town until finally setting on Dixon Illinois where his father opened up a shoe store. At age 14 he was hired to dig trenches for ten hours 6 days a week being only paid 35 cents an hour, hired by a construction contractor, he manage to save up 200 dollars for his college funds. He graduated in 1920 from Dixon High School in which he participated in athletics and was the student body president, he also participated in school plays.
