In fact, Montgomery was just announced the Best Historic City in the United States by USA Today. It is hard to image the two small settlements of cotton plantations that merged together in 1819 to form the town of Montgomery. During the Civil War, Montgomery was home of the First White House of the Confederacy, where Jefferson Davis and his family lived, but its most important historical contributions came during the Civil Rights movement. Fifty years ago the Selma to Montgomery March took place and next year is the 60th anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The city has a new revitalized riverfront, the downtown district is vibrant with entertainment and they have world-class cultural
