Yoga for Runners
1. INTRODUCTION
When contemplating what I wanted to write my research paper on, I thought heavily on the different aspects of yoga that impact my life. In recent years I have developed a love for running races: 5Ks, 10Ks, and half marathons. But, like many runners, I’ve suffered countless running related injuries that are almost a rite of passage for the sport. Revolved Crescent Lunge Another amazing hip opener, the revolved crescent lunge also allows for a rotations and stretch of the spine. Start by standing up tall with your feet together then dropping into a high lunge with your right foot forward. Then bringing your hands together, and twist at the waist and place your left elbow outside your right thigh with your gaze going off over you right shoulder. Another great pose to do before and after a run to improve flexibility and range of motion in the hips, while also alleviating tight muscles in the back. (Petretti, 2015). There are many other yoga poses that will counterbalance the stressors of running like: Bay Kasana, Thread the Needle, Bridge Pose, Reverse Child’s Pose, Triangle Pose, Supine Split, Camel Pose, Toes Pose, and Dolphin Push-ups to name a few (Pacheco, 2015). All these stretches attend to the needs of runners and help to improve a runners practice.
