A couple of years after the world celebrated and ushered the twenty first century, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), became a new challenge to the international community, and it was a proof that the world has really become a global village. With the epicenter at Guangdong Province in China, the SARS outbreak rapidly spread to twenty-nine countries between November 2002 and June 2003, with a mortality rate ranging between ten and fifty percent of the infected population. The most common symptoms of SARS include fever, dry cough, chills, fatigue, headache, diarrhea, and shortness of breath.

The first case in Taiwan was recorded on March 8, and it involved a traveler from Guangdong province, China. Within a month, twenty-three cases had been recorded in Taiwan, however, due to nosocomial infections, by April 15, the outbreak had escalated. Within four months, 246 cases had been recorded by July 5, with a case fatality ratio of twenty-seven percent. In Mongolia, a 57-year-old woman was recorded as the first case after she arrived from China on April 04 by plane, after which she infected her spouse and her daughter. In the United Kingdom, the first case to be recorded involved an individual who had contact with a Hong Kong businessman. Within a period of one month, four cases were recorded in the United Kingdome between March 03 and April 03, and all these cases included international travelers who were infected before arriving in the United Kingdom. The first case in France involve an employee of the French hospital of Hanoi, Vietnam. This patient infected two cases while on the Hanoi-Paris flight on March 22. The seven cases recorded in France occurred within a period of 43 days, between March 21 and May 03, and all of them involved international travels who got infected outside France. In Italy, the first case was a man who had returned from Hanoi, and recovered after 12 days of treatment.
