Safe Horizon is a non-profit organization located throughout the five boroughs that provides services to victims of domestic violence, child abuse, sexual assault and human trafficking. Their mission statement is “Moving Victims of Violence from Crisis to Confidence”. The specific location I visited is within the Bronx Criminal Court. The staff is very welcoming, adhering to the sensitivity of their clients. They serve victims of any gender, race, language, and age. This location is open to walk-in clients; anyone who is seeking services is free to drop by. The services provided through Safe Horizon is free of charge. In Safe Horizon at the Bronx Criminal Court, services are more focused on helping the client navigate their way through the court system. For example, case managers assist clients in understanding what a restraining order is and how to get one through the criminal court. Most of the time, clients find the program through the court or through walk-in visits. As a victim of domestic violence, clients are referred by the court or police officers to Safe Horizon. Within precincts in the Bronx, a small amount of Safe Horizon workers are also available. Across the street from the Criminal Court location is the Family Justice Center. I interned here last semester; I was always felt like a part of the team even though I was just an intern. The workers here have a sincere way of making you feel safe and included. Returning for this assignment was no issue. The program’s mission is strong and empowering. The employees of Safe Horizon seem to do all that they can to help a victim out of crisis and into a safe place. The particular office I visited was very open and kind to both clients and other workers within the courthouse. They have a great amount of services that they provide, as mentioned above. One thing that disappointed me is that they do not offer directly through Safe Horizon physical counseling. Case managers are not there to counsel clients, only provide them with the right services. Once that is done, case managers can contact clients through phone calls as a follow-up protocol. The clients are also free to drop by whenever they seek new services. There is a Safe Horizon hotline in the case that a victim needs someone to speak to when the office is not open. It would be easier for clients to find counselors within Safe Horizon since they are already familiar with the
