‘Big one’ is the name of the earthquake that strikes the state at some point of time. No one knows when and why this will happen. Recent reports state that when this catastrophic earthquake strikes California, local officers and businesses need to take appropriate measures for preventing more disastrous things. Indeed, it is predicted to be 7-8 magnitude and if we take a glance at the history of such earthquakes we are shocked. Does this really mean that many places will just turn to deserts? People will be homeless, with majority just not surviving the hardship. Local businesses and infrastructures have taken measures for constructing water supplies properly, preventing catastrophic fires. The big earthquake will cut lifelines in and out of Southern California. Such a great disaster will cause devastation to population. All the water pipelines cross at the very point that earthquake is about to happen. So, the state has prepared a way to look at alternative water supplies. In modern times the biggest quake was in 13 July 1986 with 5.3 magnitude. San Diego is 100 miles away from San Andreas Fault that is supposed to have Big one. Scientists also say that science can predict what would happen but people need to take measures when Big one happens. In such case much of the significance is based on peoples’ reactions and behavior. The State has prepared some things, like stable buildings, water alterative supplies, solar power sources, prevention of major fires. People are warned and prepared for helping each other. Residents are advised to secure those places that have heavy objects on walls, like TVs, drawings. They are also warned not to sleep near mirrors, dressers and those items that are not tightly fixed on walls. Various major issues have been planned to do to assist people with special needs. Also, children and elderly need to be given special attention. People with medical conditions, like in need of oxygen or dialysis will be supported necessarily. There is a Community Emergency Response Team and people who want can join them. The Community Emergency Response Team takes necessary measures to make people more aware of disaster and its consequences.
