The gains of the Sandinista revolution were many. A new constitution was established that guaranteed equality, freedom of expression, and abolished torture (The Somoza Family). Social reforms were instituted such as healthcare, housing, and mass education through the literacy campaign where thousands were taught to read and write (The Contras). The government also established a trade union and protected labor conditions with regulations and reforms (Keen 470). The Sandinistas received aid from Capitalist countries including the US who sent a seventy five million dollar loan under President Carter to help the private sector (Keen 469). At the same time communist countries such as Cuba and the USSR were aiding and establishing relationships
