Over the past few months anyone that follows the news have seen the phenomenon of teachers from West Virginia, Arizona and North Carolina, to name a few, marching on their state capital demanding more state funding for schools. The system of education plays a great large role this belief. A person goes to school and earns an degree then he or she will do well no matter who he or she may be. But this “fairytale” version of America does not align with the reality of living here. A study reported on NPR stated, “Black boys raised in America, even in the wealthiest families, still earn less as adults than white boys with similar backgrounds” (Donnella, 2018, p.1). That means the United States (US) is not a meritocracy, there are many other factors outside a person's control that impacts of they will do well in life. I live on a nice block in Bridgeport CT. But the neighborhood school that my children should attend is ranked very low, I choose to have my kids go to school in the district I work. Stamford Public Schools is a wealthier district with more resources and a less transient teaching staff. I am not the only one on my block that has made this choice. The neighbors on my right sends their oldest daughter to high school in Norwalk, while the neighbor on my left homeschools their teenage son. We have all made the same decision, that our local school system is not able to best educate our children and I must say there are many items that were stated in the video that I think influenced our decision.
