Should High Fructose Corn Syrup be Taken From School Lunches? As obesity has increased in adults and children, so has the rate of diabetes. The disease formerly known as adult-onset diabetes has had to be renamed type II diabetes since it occurs so frequently in children (Pollan, 76). Type II diabetes has lots of impacts, some are “blindness, amputation, and early death” (Pollan, 76). Although an inexpensive way to sweeten food, high fructose corn syrup should be taken from school lunches because childhood obesity is on the rise and can cause type II diabetes. Americans are getting more obese and it’s killing them. More children are getting inhumanely overweight, and it’s causing problems. According to Pollan, “Three out of every five Americans are overweight: one of every five are obese”. This shows, that people are getting more overweight than they are supposed to be, and it’s not good for America. This, in turn, “is a giant public health problem, costing the healthcare system an estimated $90 billion a year” …show more content…
Little do we know, high fructose corn syrup already impacts families. The first reason is because, “an awful lot of those extra corn calories are being eaten as high fructose corn syrup” (Pollan, 78). Not surprisingly, high fructose corn syrup is the sweetness in our diets, but also the unhealthiest. The second reason is because “High fructose corn syrup is such a sweet deal for the food industry since we like sweet things, adding it to our food increases the amount we eat” (Pollan, 79). Obviously, we like the sweetened food a little bit too much, that it causes people to eat it more often and that increases the amount of what you are eating. The last reason is because “you’ll find that high fructose corn syrup is everywhere” (Pollan, 79). This shows, that since high fructose corn syrup is everywhere, it makes foods way more unhealthy for Americans to
