Ayn Rand breaks the boundaries of totalitarian fiction through her novella Anthem, explaining that science and technology will fail then essentially retrogress back hundreds of years. “The towers that rose to the sky”, “the wagons which moved without horses”, and “the lights which burned without flame” (Rand 19) are obvious allusions to modern technology; Rand is here pointing out that like the Ancient Romans our society will once day collapse leaving technology and science hundreds even thousands of years behind where it should be.
