In the book “Secret Path” with music by Gord Downie and illustrated by Jeff Lemire, this graphic novel takes us on a journey with a 12 year old boy, Chanie Wenjack and his experience on his long walk home from the Cecilia Jeffrey Residential School. All Chanie wanted to do was to get back home, even if home was 400 miles away. His perseverance and determination motivated Chanie to keep walking, to keep trying. In the one song “I Will Not Be Struck” it says “I will not be struck, I’m not going back,” to me this means that Chanie won’t give up because he’d rather die on the railroad tracks instead of going back to the Residential School and dying there.
