Segway
Since opening their doors a decade ago Segway has been a leader in "small electrical vehicle space (SEV)”. (Segway-The leader in personal, green transportation). In 1999 Dean Kamen founded the Segway Company with a vision in mind. His goal was to develop a machine that was eco-friendly and could provide short distance trips. In 2001 Dean Kamen unveiled the Segway PT, allowing his vision to become a reality. He revealed a machine similar to the look of a scooter; it has the ability to self-balance, and is charged by electricity. No fuel needed. After the unveiling of the Segway PT, the company continues to strive in its force for eco-friendly transportation and provides several other models to meet the consumer needs.
Just like your cell phone that is battery powered, your Segway requires an outlet as well. At a full charge the mechanical machine can travel up to 25 miles, at a rate of about 12 mph. The Segway has the ability to leave no carbon foot prints, in the fact that Dean made sure all of his models were zero-emissions an require no fuel. The engineering of the machine is magnificent in it self, but having the ability to just move your body to control the Segway, is just another wonderful added feature.
Since its popularity has increased over the years, including it’s premier in a popular movie, Segway’s have become wanted all over the world. While it’s become national, the rules and regulations have not. Each country has developed it’s own regulations on the Segway. In Washington D.C, Segway’s are under the category of “personal mobility device” (How Segway’s are Related in DC-City Desk). Thus meaning, the fall under the same category as bicyclist. In other countries, they are to drive on the road like a vehicle, and in others they are in the bicycle lane.
Even though Segway has become immensely popular, the cost can make you Segway poor. The main market for Segway is government and municipality business. Going to the local mall, you may see security guards riding around on these machines. It’s not too often you see a regular person strolling around. Depending on the model you desire, the Segway it self can cost $5,000. This does not include the maintenance, insurance, or any safety equipment desired by the driver. Further more, what’s not taking into consideration, is the increase in the electric bill. While Segway is good for running short errands, and is environmentally friendly, at this time it’s more reasonable for a company to utilize the Segway rather than for personal use.
The overall assumption of Segway to a regular consumer is it’s too expensive and unreasonable to purchase. It’s not a necessity. While the idea according to Segway’s website is to replace the “10% of 900 million
