The APPLES Service-Learning program at the University of North Carolina Chapel hill came into existence in 1990 through the effort of a group of undergraduate students who were seeking to extend learning beyond the walls of classrooms to learning through engaging with the community around them. The Service-Learning program got its start through supporting faculty into incorporating and understanding the service-learning pedagogy in their curriculum. As APPLES continues to grow, its main aim hasn’t changed, which is to enhance and deepen learning through meaningful collaborations with community organizations.
The program is funded by student fees and it has a full-time staff for both administrative and planning responsibilities. APPLES provides a variety of programs that aspire to combine educational goals with relevant community service, APPLES programs enhance learning and provide meaningful service to communities. These service-learning programs engage and partner with community organizations, whether local, regional or global.
The first APPLES program is Service-Learning Courses. Service-Learning Courses provide students with the chance to develop learning beyond the walls of the classroom. APPLES internships are distinctive, powerful experiences in service for either the spring or summer semester. Students intern at a diverse assortment of nonprofit and governmental agencies; they also receive funding and are enrolled in a service-learning course. APPLES interns are considered staff in their organizations and therefore have a lot of accountability as well as professional development opportunities. Interns also receive personal academic instruction from a faculty member and practical experience that will aid them in growing as leaders in their
