This service learning project allowed students to make meaningful connections to content, life experiences, and personal interest through planning, implementation, and publication. First, during planning, students were supported through the brainstorming process. They were challenged to think beyond the school. I asked students to think beyond the needs of our classroom and school, expanding their minds to their community. Expanding the students’ minds allowed them to think beyond their needs and focus on the needs of the community that has supported them their whole life (personal interest). Through this, students were able to build life skills as selflessness and empathy by focusing on the needs of others. …show more content…
These skills built, challenged students but supported them in a meaningful way. They learned how to write a well-written announcement and speak of the morning announcements. Students were able to show mastery of standards through using correct punctuation, capitalization, and well-balanced ideas in the making of the announcements. Students were also able to master their fluency skills by working with a diverse group of students while interviewing them. While completing these task, students were able to develop skills they will use for a lifetime. Finally, students publicizing their project information allowed them to gain a great skill they will use in the future, the ability to speak to a large crowd (announcements). Overall this project truly challenged students, but the challenges students faced left a meaningful experience for each
