To be stigmatized means to be marked as having a lesser value, given a label, or being seen as a bad person because of one’s actions. The sex offender registry currently lists over half a million of United States citizens as sex offenders. This number continues to grow with every sex offender who is released from prison (Schultz, 2014). Individuals on the registry list are placed there for line, and often remain registered after death. The sex offender registry has been and continues to be the most prominent and damaging way to label offenders.
