Women’s Sexualization in Society Jane Austen once said, “I hate to hear you talk about all women as if they were fine ladies instead of rational creatures. None of us want to be in calm waters all our lives.” Today, women are negatively talked about everyday by means of sexist jokes, double standards, sexist language, the list could continue forever. “A new survey has found that well over three quarters of women (81 percent) have been victims of sexist jokes at work” (Bean). Sexist jokes are defined as anything that suggest that women are less able than men or refer to women's bodies, behavior, or feelings in a negative way. One of the most prominent arguments that is used to share why people believe that girls are being sexualized is dress code. There are many examples of unnecessary dress codes in schools across the United States. In Houston, a five-year-old girl was forced to change from her spaghetti-strapped, rainbow sun dress into a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. Her father said that his daughter had wanted to wear her sun dress since the weather had gotten warm again. She got to school and was forced to change into her second pair of clothes that had been placed in her backpack just in case the weather got cold again. Rouner said in his article from HoustonPress, “She's five. Cut her hair and put her next to a boy with no shirt on and she is fundamentally identical. His argument is validated by the new dress code being created every day. No undergarments showing is a dress code rule that has been argued against for a long time. Slutshaming is any act of making a person (generally female) feel guilty or inferior for sexual behaviors or desires that stray from traditional gender expectations. Every day, especially in high school, girls are called sluts for the simplest of actions. If a girl is physically attractive, then she most often called a slut. If a girl takes birth control, she is a slut. The term slut has become a proper noun in some cases. Many times, people will no longer call a girl her real name after she has been labeled as the slut of the school. The true definition of slut is a promiscuous woman. Neither of these examples give any reason that the girl could be considered promiscuous. Another way girls are slut shamed are by the number of male friends she has. Presumably, if a girl has multiple guy friends, she is sleeping with all of them. In many cases, the girl isn’t sleeping with any of them and is forced to endure the slutshaming every day. The most significant example of slutshaming is the clothing aspect. Many adults and teenagers complain about the way other teenage girls dress. A college freshman by the name of Rosea Lake created a photo project called “Judgments”. In a Huffington Post article, the author
