Sharecropping was a very common during the Reconstruction era. This system focused mainly on the cotton production since cotton was the only crop that brought in money to the farmers. This farmers and their families would work in a section of land and in return for the “borrowed” piece of land they would share the crops profits instead of wages. With this system poor black families were able to have a piece of land where they worked for themselves but still under the supervision of the landowner. The shared portion of profit at the end of each year was the only requirement for a temporary feeling of having a land of their own.
